Working on 2 novellas side by side, which is very fun. When I first started writing, I found I’d hit a wall after a certain number of pages on one project, but if I switched to another, I could do the same number. Then at some point I found myself working only on one project at a time, and I really don’t think it’s the best way for me to work. I did it because whatever was due first was the priority and it seemed logical, but the creative process isn’t straight-forward. So I’m trying out switching again. So far, so fun. Both novellas are progressing nicely.

Guess what, cuz–side by side is EXACTLY what I’ve been doing for the past week and a half, and it’s working better than anything else I’ve ever tried, for EXACTLY the same reasons you described (hit the wall, move to different project, rinse and repeat, etc.). Recession be damned, I am finally going to not only have one manuscript by summertime, I’m going to have two!
BTW and off-topic, it’s a damn shame you never got into LOST the way I hoped you would. Season 5 began last week and it is AMAZING. You have a quirky mind; you should adore this show more than I do (if that’s possible!)

Yay for you! Write, Kyle, write. So glad it’s working for you. I fell into the whole "but if I work on one thing at a time I finish it sooner" trap, when the truth is, I’m more productive working on multiple projects. And sooner or later they do all get done.
I WISH I could work on more than one project at a time but a) I’ve discovered over the last couple of weeks I’m just NOT a multi-tasker and b) If i try to work on two projects, I feel like I’m accomplishing nothing.
I’ve done that. It definitely helps spur creativity, but I don’t make much progess.
I think there will probably be times when it helps and times when it hinders. Right now, it’s helping.
I tend to dislike multi-tasking, which is why it’s strange that this works for me. I do think there’s an intensity stage where distractions are bad and single focus is best, but I’m not there right now.
I tend to work on one project at a time. Wish I could work on multiple, but my brain doesn’t want to work that way.
