Just had the second big storm of the year and it left a lot of tree debris and damage behind. Power and internet were back this morning, yay, but it made us realize that we’d gotten lax about knowing where flashlights and batteries were. Now is a good time to make sure you have emergency supplies in order for winter.
Along with our winterizing checklist, we need to pick up bigger boots and more mittens for kids who outgrew/lost items since the snow melted.
Are you ready for winter?
Power outtages and tornadoes are our two biggest winter problems here, but we’ve got the generator and I’ve stocked up on bottled water and non-perishables. I’m debating on whether or not to get a battery-operated digital tv (weather radio is great before storms, but after the 2004 hurricanes our little portable tv was our only dependable line of communication to civilization for a solid month of living without power.)
I bought some adult-size mittens for me and Kat at Target, 2 pair for $5. Nice and warm, and they’re machine-washable. I’m not sure if they have the same deal/product in kids’ sizes but you might want to check online.
We’ve got a generator and water stored, too. We’ve been through the winter storm routine too many times not to have that as a constant. A battery operated digital TV is a great idea, when we don’t have internet or power our only communication is via cell phone.
Nice tip on the mittens, I’ll check that out. They’re so easily lost, it pays to buy in multiples. We could have snow this weekend so we’re trying to make sure everybody’s outfitted. Snow pants, coats, and hats are covered, but I kept finding single gloves and mittens. *g*
Not ready supply-wise, & thanks for the reminder. I keep limited bottled water & non-perishables on hand, enough warm clothing, but would love to have a generator.
And mentally, don’t think I’m EVER ready for winter, lol.
One thing we didn’t have on hand; more salt for icy patches on sidewalks/driveway! We used it up last year and didn’t replace. It’s always good to run through the checklist.
