TV for DVD; is it just me?

Paperbackwriter commented at Shannon’s yesterday on writers blogging about TV, and it made me wonder: am I the only one who doesn’t watch TV?

I don’t. We have a TV. The kids use it to watch episodes of Backyardigans, Veggie Tales, Little Einsteins and Leapfrog DVDs (I highly recommend Leapfrog’s Letter Factory, Word Factory and Storybook Factory for helping little readers learn to read). We use it to do our 12 Second Sequence workouts twice a week, which are on DVD.

In other words, the TV is a DVD player. We don’t watch channels. I don’t think we even get reception. We haven’t watched TV as TV for years. We don’t miss it.

We do buy episodes of shows we’re interested in; Monk, Firefly, Bleach. But mostly, the TV is for kid entertainment and education. If I have free time, I’d rather read a book than watch TV. I always have. In fact, in a high school creative writing class I was totally lost when assigned to write a script for one of 2 or 3 popular TV shows…none of which I’d ever seen. (I could have written a Star Trek script, but that wasn’t on the list.)

So, I’m a writer and I don’t watch TV. I really can’t be the only one, can I?

You know for the first couple of years I was writing I didn’t watch TV either. I blame LAO: SVU for my downfall (

I think it’s a mix of writing and kids; I can’t watch anything non-small-child appropriate unless they’re in bed, and that’s writing time. And during the days I really don’t have time to sit and watch something, either. Books, however, I can always dip into *g*.

Well mine are home this summer…and it gets worse when they get older. ( Luckily there’s nothing on right now AND I have a DVR for the occasional time there IS something on ) So I just tape stuff then catch up on the weekends. But like you I LOVE TV on DVD

  4. Charli says:

Yep, buying whole seasons on DVD is like the best invention ever. I also like being able to rent ‘em from Netflix. And I have my fingers in my ears while I sing la la la about them getting older…

    I am not a writer…and I don’t watch tv. I watch Nip/Tuck when it’s on but that’s maybe 4 times a year.

TV bores me. I’d rather read.

I’m SO the opposite. Not only do we have the TV here, but our camper up north has two TVs, each with a DVD player and one with a VCR, and it’s only 34′ long. *g*

Sad, I know. I’d probably be a lot more prolific if I blew them all up.

  7. Tracy says:

Nope, I don’t watch much TV either. Once in a while I watch the Discovery channel, but that’s about it. I read in the evenings if I have any time!

  8. Charli says:

Annmarie, glad I’m not the only one!

  9. Charli says:

Shannon, two in the camper? You may be a TV junkie. *ggg*

Tracy, that’s a big if, isn’t it? Sigh. I do like to end the day reading somebody else’s book, though. : )

I only watch one show, but I have a huge stack of DVD sets to watch, which I’ve never actually gotten around to watching. Now that I finally have a really biiiiig TV, though, I’m trying to sit down and actually watch those DVDs. It does seem to take a lot of time out of the day, though!

  12. Charli says:

Ellen, that one show would be Smallville? *g* It does take time to sit and watch something. And I’m so glad to see you out and about!

  13. Ellen F. says:

Yes, that one show would be Smallville (although I have to admit I watch One Tree Hill occasionally too, but it’s more my daughter’s show than mine). But I have DVD sets for Supernatural, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, and three different Superman series– one of these days I really need to sit down and watch them all.

  14. Charli says:

Oh, man, Doctor Who alone could keep you busy for months! That show’s run for so many seasons.
