Life Expectancy, Dean Koontz

If you’re looking for a fast-paced read with a twisty plot and characters you fall in love with (along with a truly heart-warming romance), look no further than Life Expectancy by Dean Koontz. Full of feeling and pithy words of wisdom about life and pastry, this book grabbed me from page one and never let go. And I think I’m going to adopt the baker’s philosophy of hope: “there’s always cake”. I’ve never read a better book about family. My only complaint is that it didn’t come with bakery samples to munch on while seeing the characters get their just desserts.

One word of warning: do not read if you suffer from coulrophobia. Diabetics should probably tread with care, too, because it’s enough to make you want to knock over a pastry shop.

Wolf’s progress and new review on Dangerous Games

I realized yesterday that while my progress on Wolf hasn’t resulted in new pages, there HAS been progress. Sometimes it’s just hard to measure. I needed some pretty in-depth technical detail for one key scene, and I also finally figured out what was bugging me about the story in general. Sometimes it takes a while for the penny to drop, but when it did, I saw that my characters had fallen into a plot hole that rendered them Too Stupid To Live. Plot hole has been resolved. As an added bonus, it resolves the same plot hole in my other werewolf story. It’s part of working out the rules for my fantasy world.

Now I really can just finish the sucker. Huzzah!

In other news, there’s a new review of Dangerous Games on Enchanted in Romance, 4.5 Unicorns. Reviewer Rachelle calls it “hard and gritty” and “a sure winner for any sci-fi geeks who also love hotter than hot sex”. She also wants Drake’s house. Me too!

And a funny thing about voice

I’ve been reading PBW’s blog for some time now, and as I read “Private Demon”, it’s amazing how recognizably her voice both are. Wildly different, sure, but it’s the kind of words selected, the turn of a phrase, the tone.

I’ve read books by several people with blogs I also read, and I’m coming to view author blogs in a different light as a result. The voice really does come through, much more than I expected. I always thought my books were totally different from my blog, but maybe it all sounds like me. Huh. Those of you who’ve read both books and blog, what do you think?

Will it ever end?

I’ve been in the “almost finished” stage with Wolf for freakin’ ever. I want to be done already! There are reasons for this (the move, the visit, the allergy overload from the move), but that doesn’t make me feel better. I always have this sense that unless I’m in the act of dying, I should be producing. “A writer writes,” says Billy Crystal in Throw Momma From the Train.

Bloggity blog

Today the parents head back home. It was nice having visitors, and having the kids old enough to be interactive with them. I now have the decks clear to finish up the final details on Wolf and shove it out the door. I needed some technical detail, which was supplied by my husband. Having those details, I can now put them in. So that’s my project for today. Everything else is done, blurb and all.
