Claimed by the Wolf: A Shadow Guardians Novel coming 2009 from St. Martin’s Press
They guard humanity against supernatural threats from the five gateways into the world. The Shadow Guardians: vampire, werewolf, demon, dragon and sidhe united in war—and love.

An apprentice witch unknowingly acquires a demonic grimoire that opens a gate to other realms, allowing dark, forbidden forces to enter the world. Now her only hope lies in gaining sufficient power to master the book instead of becoming its servant, and overcoming a centuries-old enmity to trust a werewolf as her ally…and lover.

While Abaran knocked on the vampire’s door, Sybil shifted nervously from one foot to the other. “Does he sleep in a coffin? Is there some sort of Renfrew on duty?”

He turned to stare at her. “Did you hit your head when you fell in the river?”

She stuck her tongue out at him.

The door opened on silent hinges, and Adrian stood there, broad and solid, regarding both of them with an unfathomable expression. There was a suggestion of military discipline in his stance. Sybil stopped fidgeting and tried to stand straight. It was far too late to wish for a good hair day, but she could try for good posture.

When he kept looking at her without speaking, her nerves stretched to the breaking point. “Hi. It’s me. Sybil. We met the other day when demons attacked and the five of you agreed to take turns having supernatural sex with me. Tonight’s your night.” She smiled brightly and added, “I’m A negative. I hope that isn’t a problem for you.”

“One moment,” Abaran said to him. He turned and began running his fingers through her hair.

“I didn’t hit my head,” she snapped.

“You’re acting deranged.”

“Well, you would be, too.” She folded her arms and glared at the demon. “Demonic books, shape-shifting wolves and dragons, dare-devil demons who don’t know how to keep a promise. And don’t think I didn’t know you were lying!” To her horror, she burst into tears.

“Witch, I’ve told you. I’m immortal.”

“Well, don’t expect me to feel sorry for you when you find out how much you can suffer and still live,” Sybil shouted.

Abaran looked at Adrian and shrugged. “She worries.” He put his hands on her shoulders and pushed her at the vampire.

She balked, dug her feet in, then switched tactics and flung her arms around his neck. “Kiss me goodbye.”

“Witch.” He extended his wings and furled them around her, cocooning her body against his. His lips brushed the top of her hair. “I will return in twenty-four hours to escort you to Ronan, and when I do, you will apologize for being a hysterical female.”

Sybil pressed close to him. “Any female would be hysterical after twenty-four hours with you.”

“Then you can apologize now.”

“I won’t.” She breathed him in. “Goodbye, Abaran. If you aren’t here when you said you would be, I’ll hunt you down and kick your ass.”

“Don’t let catching me off-guard once give you false confidence.”

She sniffed. He laughed and released her, retracting his wings and folding them invisibly into his back. “Go and torment the vampire. He can count the hours until I take your troublesome person off his hands.”

Sybil walked past Adrian, who held the door open for her without a word. It closed behind her with a whisper. She wrapped her arms around herself to ward off the chill that descended on her. “I’m not hysterical,” she said.

“No?”

“Nervous, maybe.” She looked around, squinting in the low light. “Do you have bats? I hate bats.”

“No bats.”

“Good. What about cobwebs? There is such a thing as too much atmosphere, you know.”

“Maybe you’d like a white glove so you can check,” Adrian said in a voice as dry as dust.

Monday’s brew

Monday’s brew is hot and good
Tuesday’s brew’s misunderstood
Wednesday’s brew sits on the burner too long
Thursday’s brew is nice and strong
Friday’s brew is a flavor-filled cup
Saturday’s brew has to keep up
But the coffee brewed on the Sabbath day
Is best sipped in bed before going to play.

Happy Columbus Day!

Doing my part

I’m helping to stimulate the economy. I threw away the rest of the bag of crappy coffee. Couldn’t take it anymore. It was so bad we weren’t drinking much, and without caffeine, we cannot function around here.

Books I must have

Despite my stack of unread books, there are always more books I must have. Like, Patricia Briggs’ latest. Like Anna Campbell’s Claiming the Courtesan. (Crazy love, I must have it!) Like Bujold’s next installment in the The Sharing Knife series, Horizon. And there’s the Rogue Angel series Sasha White recommended with a sword-wielding heroine. I can’t pass that up.

What books are in your “must have” list?
