The Hallowed Hunt

Finished The Hallowed Hunt yesterday and am still nearly speechless. If you haven’t discovered this fantasy series yet, run don’t walk to get The Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls before diving headfirst into the third installment. Like the first two, Hunt focuses on one of the five gods, the Son of Autumn. So my main consolation on reaching the last page is knowing that two more books at least will come before the series ends. And like the first two books, Hunt also has strong romance elements that will please crossover readers. If a romance reader out there hasn’t tried a fantasy yet, Curse of Chalion is a good place to start. You’ll probably get hooked and keep going.

One of my favorite aspects of this series, along with Bujold’s astounding characterization, rich prose and spledidly subtle humor, is the relationship of each “saint” with their god and how diametrically opposed the reality is to pious theory. This takes a certain mindset to appreciate and fundamentalists would probably hate it, but there is something so wonderfully true about the reluctant hero of Hunt arguing with the Son of Autumn. Reminds me of Jonah’s anger at God over failing to destroy Ninevah.

This is a richly realized fantasy world peopled with amazing characters and fascinating conflicts that I could spend twice the time in and still not nearly feel finished. So now I’m heading to the Bujold Nexus to see if there’s any news of her next book’s release date yet.

Website updates and a happy day

My wonderful husband did website updates this morning, so the revamping is mostly done. There’s now space on the front page for news besides the latest release and upcoming releases. Had to happen because while I always post news in the blog, not everybody is going to read the blog or check older entries for news items. I think it’s much better organized now.

Today’s a great day; the latest Harry Potter hits the shelves! I’ll be off to cadge my copy sometime today. AND we’re a two-car family again! YES! I’ll be able to pack up the sprouts and take them to North Beach and Fort Worden to walk when the husband’s away working.

My readathon; I’m nearly done with The Hallowed Hunt and it’s every bit as stupendous as I expected it to be. Bujold makes me drop my jaw in awe.

Today is the day; tune in to Montel Williams!

On July 14, tune in to the Montel Williams show to see a special
interview with Tina Engler, aka Jaid Black, founder of Ellora’s Cave,
Inc. This episode is about “Debt to Millionaire”, and features four
different and amazing women who beat all odds to become successful
businesswomen.

During the taping, Jaid, on behalf of Ellora’s Cave, made a pledge to
the Montel Williams Multiple Sclerosis Foundation to donate 15 cents
for every ebook and print book that is sold from our website for the
thirty days following the airing of the program. Jaid gave him a check
for $10,000.

Ellora’s Cave is a huge supporter in the fight to find a cure for
Multiple Sclerosis. Several employees and authors for the Cave have
Multiple Sclerosis, and even more have family members affected by this
debilitating disease. Please tune in on July 14 to learn more about
Jaid Black and Ellora’s Cave, and to see how you can help in the fight
against MS.

Find out when the Montel Show airs in your city and shop EC to support a great cause! (Yeah, I’m a little late getting this posted today. Hey, I’m lucky to be dressed before noon considering how the morning’s gone so far.)

Because I’m not already juggling enough projects…

I started thinking about all the topics I want to do a parenting brain dump on and before I knew it I had a 10-chapter outline for a nonfiction book. Dunno what I’ll do with it when it’s done; bounce it by some publishers, make it a free ebook on my site, or what, but that’s a problem for another day. First thing: unclog brain by dumping all this stuff in a book. Then figure out what to do with said book.

Ponder ponder ponder

I’m debating a blog thing. I intended Writer’s Blog to focus on writing and related issues, but lately I find I have a lot to say about parenting. I could write articles on that topic here and categorize them as “parenting”, but I’m not sure they really belong here. Alternatively, I could look at joining a community parenting blog and start contributing regularly there, like I do on RTB.

Of course, a lot of writers and aspiring writers are also parents and it may not be entirely off-topic to add that here. Working around children is part of the job for most of us.

Ponder, ponder, ponder. What do you think, blog readers? Either way, this stuff has to go somewhere. It’s clogging up my brain!
