War of the Worlds and Bewitched is at the drive-in!

What a great double feature. And since the husband passed his Security Plus exam today (hurrah, husband!) we will be celebrating by packing up the family and heading out to our favorite big screen in the woods tonight. (Hey, it’s not like anybody’s sleeping anyway.) I’m looking forward to this, War of the Worlds out of sheer curiosity and Bewitched because I loved the TV show and this looks like a great new twist on the original.

I’m still having fun with “The Right to Write” and working through many of the writing exercises. It’s great stuff for keeping your sanity in this crazy business. Here’s one for you to play with: write down 50 things you’re proud of in your life. My list encompassed everything from moving back to Washington to learning kenpo. What’s on yours?

Writing rights things

Every time I went to my computer this week, quotes from “The Right to Write” by Julia Cameron would go through my head and finally I realized that what I really wanted to be doing with my time was rereading that book. So yesterday I pulled it off the shelf and flipped it open and read this quote, “I learn by going where I have to go.” And immediately a tension I didn’t even know I was holding went out of me. I read on. Words of balance and sanity, reminders that writing is a reason unto itself, that “writing rights things”. It does.

My very smart unconscious brain knew that before I was ready to sit down and start producing stories again, I needed a reminder about why it’s worth doing, no matter what.

It’s easy to stop listening, as she says, and start talking on the page instead. And then there you sit, full of tension, feeling self-conscious. But stories aren’t about self. They’re bigger. And to get to something bigger than me, I have to listen.

Today I don’t care if I produce a page, a paragraph or a sentence. I want to remember to listen, to get out of my own way, to learn by going where I have to go. And let writing right things, in my head and in my life and in my story. Thanks, Julia, I needed that.

Let’s do the time warp again (parenting)

I didn’t know it was Wednesday until I stuck my head into EC Chat and saw the announcement that the new releases were out. Holy cow. What happened to Monday and Tuesday? What is it about feeding a newborn every 3 hours that makes the days pass in a blur? Besides sleep deprivation, I mean. I think it’s the loss of a clearly defined 24 hour day. My life is divided into approximately 3 hour segments and the standard day has no meaning in Baby Time Warp.

And that reminds me, I was pretty sure the whole donut fetish would end with pregnancy, but then I found myself thinking that when we relocate to cut down the husband’s commute, we’ll be a mere 10 minute drive and 30 minute ferry ride away from Krispy Kreme. When will it end? Will I wind up in chocolate cake donut rehab when Morgan starts kindergarten?

Well. Time to hit the coffee pot and see what evil I can perpetrate on my defenseless characters today. Mwahaha.

Editing to add: Just finished Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Things are shaping up about as I expected, and there are a few more things I expect to see in book 7. Great story! Can’t wait for the next book! And now, if you want spoilers, rush over to the discussion on Shannon’s blog.

One advantage to very young children in the house…

Nobody’s ahead of me to read Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Nice. In fact, I’m using the infant feeding time to sneak reading in. Hold baby with one hand, flip pages with the other…

BIAW is not off to a stunning start, but today’s another day. My goals are really, really low. If I produce any writing at all, I’ll be pleased. This is mainly my attempt to start working writing into the schedule and seeing where and how it’ll fit. Which can be surprisingly productive; Julia Cameron produced a whole lot of work by fitting it into bits of time.

Kona in my veins, BIAW again and what’s with the coyotes?

Book In a Week starts today and with the aid of astounding quantities of Kona coffee percolating through my cardiovascular system and flooding my synapses I expect to hammer out some pages. I have one fairly predictable block of time each day when the infant and toddler are both asleep and I’m going to use it for BIAW.

Dunno what’s going on with the coyote population around here, but yesterday there was a new sign tacked up in the hiking area at Fort Worden: Warning, aggressive coyotes. Keep all pets leashed, watch small children. The sign wasn’t there last weekend. Last summer there was an outbreak of distemper in the racoons, this year maybe there’s something similar happening with the coyotes. Since our house is in the same wooded trail vicinity as the warning, I’m trying to find out what’s up and if we should keep the cats indoors during the day, too.
