Lately I’ve been on a keeper book binge. Books from about ten years ago that I loved, that inspired me. And I compare them to current books and ask myself what it is about these books that makes them stay with me.
Do you visit your keeper books? What is it about them that you don’t find in today’s new releases?
I actually re-read keepers quite frequently. I’m not quite sure what it is about them that makes me want to re-read them over and over again. I suppose if I had to guess I’d say it has something to do with the place I was in when I first read them. I’d been reading romances for years, but most of my keepers appeared when I really got into romance novels. It was also when I was mentally toying with writing them. I think there’s a bit of nostalgia happening. The one thing they all have in common is that they touch me emotionally in some way.
I think it’s the same for me, Jordan. I read romance for years, but when I got serious about writing it, those books had a different impact.
I haven’t touched some of my keepers lately. I eyeball them, think of committing a weekend to rereading before I angle toward a new release and forget.
One I want to reread over and over again is the Garden Spell. I love that book and can’t wait to pull it down from the shelf and dive in. Even after a few years of not reading it, it’s fresh in my mind. But the writing, oh to be able to write that way and leave such an impression in the reader.
Off to move that book closer to the read me pile.
Kristen, I haven’t read the Garden Spell. Must check that out.
re-reading keeper books is like visiting old friends. I have several books I pull out for different times of the year. sometimes just because I miss the people that have been created. those are the memerable ones.
Denise, some books have characters that just stay with you no matter how many years go by. I love those.
I’ve been rereading “keepers” lately. They evoke a certain feeling. No matter how many times I’ve read them, they make me laugh or cry or smile.
