Novella in a week (or something like that)

Cranking out my novella. My poor E.C. editor has an ungodly number of the Feb. releases coming from her authors so revisions on Dangerous are slightly delayed. I figure I have time to pound out my novella, or at least a lot of it, before I have to switch to Edit Mode. I’m making excellent headway.

I love the whole BIAW concept; you just focus on getting the words down and it works well with my style. I write scenes in no particular order, then move them around to where they belong. Same with smaller blocks of text. It really does seem to be true that the faster you go, the stronger the writing is. Revision and cleanup follows, but getting the words down on the page has to happen first or there’s nothing to revise.

Oddly enough, this is a story with no theme song. It’s working anyway. In two days I’ve done the whole synopsis and outline with a significant amount of text written. My goal is to get it done by the time I get an answer on the proposal I sent in. Best way to keep from obsessing over the outcome.

A lovely misty morning

Woke up to the sound of fog horns so we knew without opening the blinds that it was a foggy morning. It’s actually nice, the fog makes everything look mysterious and secretive. When we take our usual walk, sometimes the San Juan Islands are hidden in fog. Sometimes the fog bank is right at the edge of the water so when we look down over the bluff at the Straits it looks like the edge of the world. And some mornings, like this one, whisps of fog infiltrate the neighborhood, wrap around the trees and make the neighboring houses look much farther away.

I’ve been writing away on my Valentine story. Not what I’m “supposed” to be doing next, but a short piece might be a good way to warm up to doing the next novel, getting me out of “edit” mode. I’ve also switched to a workstyle that seems to suit my current needs, doing 2-3 sessions of writing instead of one big one. This includes a midnight session, since I keep waking up in the middle of the night for about an hour and I figured I might as well be productive if I can’t sleep. That seems to be working well for me and I’ll keep going with it through the Valentine novella, letting that be my test.

Anthology submission’s away!

Got my 2006 anthology (non-Cavemen) submission written up and sent in. Great story, so whether or not they want it for the anthology, I’ll be writing it! I just have to figure out where to put it in the schedule. I have more time for my Cavemen anthology submission so I’m just letting that simmer in the backbrain. Eventually the perfect story for Cavemen will pop up, in plenty of time to get it in under the deadline.

Speaking of deadlines, Dangerous will be next and after that comes the sequal to Love and Rockets.

And a little about the upcoming Legendary Tales II anthology: Jan Springer and I swapped stories for a sneak preview. Wow, is it going to be good!

My long-delayed review of That Familiar Touch

First of all, Dara Joy fans, you can still order That Familiar Touch. The web shopping cart’s a little clunky, doesn’t show order status for instance, but you get email confirmation that your order was received and is processing. Being the impatient soul that I am I replied to this email to get an approximate ETA on my book, and it did arrive in a timely manner given the shipping method.

The book itself exceeded expectations. Novellas are challenging, they don’t have the room a novel has to develop characters and that’s especially useful when revisiting series characters, because you want to know all about what they’ve been doing since you last saw them. Dara Joy did a fantastic job in developing the romance between Soosha and Daxan while still catching up with old Matrix of Destiny friends and wrapping it all up in novella length.

The second novella in the book, In Kirkpatrick’s Woods, is just as beautifully developed and underneath the surface story provides an anology for the romance reading experience. For those who are still scratching their heads and wondering why women keep buying romance novels by the bushel, the answer is In Kirpatrick’s Woods.

Wonderful fantasy, wonderful romance, with the humor you expect from Dara Joy. A terrific read I highly recommend.

Love and Rockets Smooch of the Day!

Love and Rockets is up on ecataromance’s SMOOCH of the day, where you can read it and vote! One month and counting to the release date.

Lots of rain falling this weekend, with flood warnings for several Washington counties including Jefferson. However, up here in the rain shadow we’re not likely to see anything too dramatic. It might mean we don’t hike Fort Worden today, though.
